A family holiday in Majorca next May and his first ever brand new dining table are on the cards after Richard Clegg scooped the annual November £5k staff lottery jackpot.

It's second time lucky too as Richard won £1,000 on it two years ago - but then had to spend £960 on a new carpet!

Around 1,300 colleagues enter the lottery every month with all the monies to going towards buying extras for the Trust to make it better for our patients and their families.

Richard was stunned when the call came in. He said: " I was at work when they rang to tell me. I had to keep calm and professional and go back to a 20-week scan but inside I was thinking "Wow" and "crickey". Last time we had to spend it on carpet and had £40 left over, so this time we'll make it special for all the  family - and I'll have a new dining table for the first time in my life."

He has been at the Trust 16 years "man and boy", trained in 2000 and qualified in 2003 in X-rays. However he is leaving in January for a new role training hospital staff to use scanning machinery.

He said: " This team has been my little family. I joined as an immature kid and now I'm an immature big kid and I shall miss the place."

In the past year staff lottery money has gone on:

  • Ice machine for the Surgical Assessment Unit
  • Benches for HRI grounds – Estates/Facilities
  • Fridge for St John’s Health Centre
  • Furniture for viewing rooms – CRH & HRI Mortuaries
  • Relaxation CDs for Supported Self-Management Team
  • Funding towards Staff Support Day – Chaplaincy/Workforce

Laurie Beckett, from workforce benefits,  said: “ The staff lottery is a lovely scheme to be part of. It’s £2 a month and even if you don’t win the Trust and our patients are winners. “
