Consultant in Oral & Maxillofacial Surgery,Mr David Sutton, said: "Mouth and throat cancers are sadly on the increase yet  the majority of these could be treated with great success if detected early. We advise people to get in the habit of examining their own mouth and seeking help from their dentist or GP if they notice any unusual changes that don’t settle within two weeks.  Of course, to keep your risk of developing cancer as low as possible we would always recommend people don't smoke or drink excess alcohol.  It is thought some of the increase in mouth and throat cancer is due to HPV (a wart virus), and for this reason we recommend the vaccination against HPV."
