This is an important notice for all colleagues who are registered with the Nursing and Midwifery Council. (NMC)

Later this year, all NMC registered nurses and midwives regardless of their role will have to undergo a revalidation process.

The indented change commences in October 2015. This new process is initially being tested on multiple sites and healthcare settings across the country. The Trust has a task and finish group working on the developments and we will keep you updated regarding requirements, however  you should also visit the NMC website. http://www.nmc-uk.org/Nurses-and-midwives/Revalidation/FAQs-on-revalidation/

In the meantime the recommendations currently being piloted suggest there are some steps you should undertake to ensure you are ready for the process. These are:

  • Familiarise yourself with your date for revalidation (every 3 years)
  • Undertake your online registration  with the NMC
  • Ensure you have an up-to-date appraisal
  • Have five pieces of reflection in relation the NMC code of practice
  • Start to acquire five pieces of feedback. These can be for example from patients, your line managers, on-line comments, complaints and incidents
  • You will also have to show you are achieving the required number of hours of continuous professional development that is relevant to your practice.

 Thank you

 Director of Nursing,

 Julie Dawes

**Revalidation is being introduced as a recommendation following the Francis Enquiry, to assure patients and the public that nurses and midwives are competent to deliver safe high quality compassionate care. This is a big change for nurses and midwives in declaring their fitness to practise. It is very important for all registered nurses regardless of their role familiarise themselves with the process and take personal responsibility to ensure they have fulfilled the requirements expected of them.
