Feedback to PALS has resulted in closer working, so much so that with a patient's mum came along to share her knowledge about Diabetes Insipidus (DI) at last week's Grand Round doctors' educational session.

Patient Lucy and her mum Judy's experience of our services had been frustrating in the past. These concerns were addressed though it highlighted there was still a gap to be filled in terms of learning for frontline colleagues, especially around Diabetes Insipidus (DI).

Acting General Manager ECN, Caroline Smith said "Judy is passionate around working with us to improve our skills and knowledge around DI and she jumped at the opportunity to provide some training for our staff.

"We are really excited that Judy was able to deliver training to the junior doctors with the support of Dr Julie Kyaw-Tun (see picture) and in turn pass on their knowledge of DI to the future generation of consultants.  This is a fantastic way of demonstrating the positive outcome that we can gain from our complaints procedure within the hospital.

"By working together we will enable our service to be more responsive to our patient’s needs".

The team are also working together with Judy and Lucy to develop a management plan for all staff to follow when Lucy comes into hospital.  It will incorporate Lucy’s VIP Passport and will trigger urgent actions that need to be put in place quickly by the medical teams looking after her.  It also identifies a Lead Consultant (Julie) and signposts staff to what to do and where to go for support in managing Lucy’s complex medical needs whilst acknowledging that Judy (mum) is the expert on Lucy’s care and a knowledgeable resource to be tapped into.
