Four year old Sonny came in to the children's ward in June 2014 with his mum Sheryl, who works here at Calderdale Royal in the catering department, and dad Daniel.

Sonny was diagnosed with type 1 diabetes just before his 2nd birthday, and was in hospital initially for four days in HDU. He had to have insulin injections and be cannulated and he was very brave!

Sonny now has to have four insulin injections every day.

Recently, the Huddersfield Examiner put an advert out to find a local hero to open a new B&M store in Elland, and Sonny’s mum nominated him along with three other anonymous people.

The Staff from B&M chose Sonny as the winner out of all the children and adults who had been put forward and mum was emailed with the good news.

On the day of the opening, Sonny was the first person to be allowed into the store where he got VIP treatment and was allowed to choose a present. He cut the ribbon and received £250 worth of B&M vouchers.

Following his time on the Ward and the experience he had, he decided to split the money and use £125 to spend on toys and prizes to donate to the Ward's Bravery Award Scheme, where every time children have to endure an unpleasant procedure they get a star on their reward card and every 5 stars they receive they get a prize.

Sonny was very pleased with his prizes and thought that the staff on the ward were so kind and helpful that he wanted to give something back. 

His mum and dad also wanted to say... "A big thank you to all the staff on the ward and also in the Children's Clinic, it is a great award scheme and it is nice for children to be rewarded when they are brave." 

Finally, all the staff and patients on the children’s ward would like to say a massive thank you for Sonny's very generous donation, it will make lots and lots of future patients be very happy indeed.
