Vanessa Manning stopped in her tracks in shock when she suddenly spotted Owen Williams and a Star Award certificate in ED at CRH.

The surprise was sprung together with her nominator Laura Wyles who said Vanessa had taken all the new housekeepers "under her wing" and provides a fantastic example every day.

Vanessa, wiped away a sly tear, and said: "When I saw Owen in the ED, I didn't think for one minute that it had anything to do with me. I often see him passing through the department, speaking with staff. I am absolutely thrilled to win the Star Award and I felt very emotional to have even been nominated.

"I have worked as a housekeeper in the ED for seven years. This is my first role within the NHS and I will hopefully remain until retirement. I love working in this department, helping staff and patients in any way I can and I feel honoured to be part of an amazing team.

"I feel that if we look after the staff by keeping them hydrated and keep the department clean and well stocked, they are more able to concentrate on patient care. I also love looking after the patients, a smile and a lovely brew can make a difference.

"I love my job and look forward to whatever challenges the day may bring."

Laura said: "Vanessa give 100% every day and no-one ever has a bad word to say about her. She said she ensures our patients get refreshments, assists with day to day cleaning, stocking and upkeep of the department.

"She is an absolute pleasure to work with and her presence is always noticeable in the positive atmosphere around the department."

She also checks on her colleagues to ensure everyone is ok when the pressure is on the department.
