Dr Elizabeth Loney is our new Associate Medical Director and Consultant Head and Neck Radiologist. She's scared of spiders and her Dad is her hero! Here's more in Hello My Name Is....

Tell us about your background

I qualified in London and did training there, originally to become an ENT surgeon, but later changing to Radiology. My first Consultant post was in the Midlands but I was soon asked to move to Bradford to lead the Head and Neck Radiology service there, including imaging for cancer and cochlear implant patients. I was clinical lead there for a while and was then approached to become Clinical Director for Radiology in Darlington and Durham. Once there I was appointed as Divisional Director for Clinical Specialist Services which I greatly enjoyed. However, I’ve always lived in Shipley and working away from home takes its toll. I’m very grateful for the opportunity to come back to my roots (I was born in Halifax), see more of my family again and take up my current roles.

What are the highlights of your career so far?

Welcoming the European Society of Head and Neck Radiology to an international meeting in London as President of the British Society of Head and Neck Imaging. Also being elected to the Faculty Board of the Royal College of Radiologists by my peers in a national ballot.

Sum up your role in three words

Listening, encouraging, helping

What did you want to be when you were growing up?

To be happy, and to be able to eat anything I want without putting on weight (the latter hasn’t happened yet!)

Who is your hero/heroine and why?

My Dad is my hero. Kind and compassionate, he always believed in me more than I did. I miss him.

When you are not at work, how do you relax?

I like watching films, crafting, playing board games and cuddling my cats.

What is your favourite place?

I love to travel and have visited many places, but my favourite place is at home with my family.

What would people be surprised to know about you?

I’m scared of spiders but I once owned a Mexican red-knee tarantula called Esmerelda to try and cure me of my fears. It didn’t work!
