We're running a short series celebrating and highlighting the work of some of our 750 HCAs.

And this week we've a lovely story of how Michelle Simpson's smile made all the difference to the family of Suzanne Dunkley - our head of WOD. (pictured)

Michelle was caring for Director of WOD Suzanne Dunkley’s mother-in-law in 2016.

Suzanne, recalls that time. She says: "I remember Michelle not just for her kindness and compassion to my mum-in-law but to me and my family. Her smile was worth its weight in gold on some days. Sometimes, a smile is all we can give to patients. We patients know that and it means the world!"

Michelle has been a  HCA for 21 years. She says: "I think being a good HCA is giving good quality care showing compassion , good communication skills."

Her favourite part is being part of a team looking after patients and being hands-on in every aspect of their care.

And key to being a good HCA? " By intoducing myself to patients' relatives. A smile goes a long way."

Our Chief Nurse Ellen Armistead and Deputy Lindsay Rudge are hosting some coffee and chat drop-ins for them - and the first one is next Thursday 17th at CRH. If you're thinkng of coming please let uus know so we can have the coffee and cakes waiting. You can call HRI 5648 or email engagementteam@cht.nhs.uk
