Our next recruitment fair is on Saturday 12th October. We are looking to recruit final year students and qualified staff, including Nurses, Midwives and Theatre Practitioners for Band 5 roles.

Here newly-qualifed A&E Staff Nurse Abigail Thackray, explains why, even though she was scared of blood when she was little, a family illness made her want to take up nursing.

What made you come to the recruitment day before you joined us?

I did my nurse training in Newcastle, however I’m a local girl and wanted to move back home once I had qualified but didn’t know where to start in terms of looking for jobs. Because I was moving to a new trust being newly qualified I was so nervous, but the recruitment event was so helpful and all the staff are super friendly so it really put me at ease!

Have you always wanted to be a nurse?

No I was so scared of blood when I was little! Then when I was a teenager a family member became ill, and that’s when I realised I wanted to be a nurse. I absolutely love my job and couldn’t imagine myself doing anything else

What did you do before you came to the Trust?

I attended Greenhead College then went to University in Newcastle

How have you found your training, plus the support from your colleagues?

Coming to a new trust I have had so much support from all my colleagues. I absolutely adore the team I work with and have definitely made friends for life!

Are you on rotation and do you have a favourite area to work?

I’m not on rotation, however being in A&E I do work in different parts of the department each shift which are all very different and allow me to use different skills depending on where I’m working

What would you say to someone who might be thinking of coming along?

Go with an open mind because you never know what opportunities may arise! I always thought I wanted to work in plastics, however I ended up applying for A&E and I absolutely love it!
