Our ICU sister Caroline Winkley is celebrating after her daughter bagged an amazing medals haul at this year's World Transplant Games. 

In Newcastle this year, swimmer Ava broke two world records and set three new records in events not previously swum - so it was a real oustanding effort. She is pictured here on the podium with three of her gold medals.

Caroline, pictured attached with Ava, said:  I couldn't be prouder."

Held every two years, the Transplant Games are a celebration of people of all ages who have been given a second chance at life after receiving an organ donation.

Caroline, added: "The week was amazing, the sportsmanship and camaraderie was fantastic with everyone there celebrating a second chance at life. There were competitors in their 80's loving sport and keeping active. The opening ceremony and gala dinner was just the friendliest."

Ava had a liver transplant in 2013 when she was just five years old in a nine-hour operation.  At just seven months old she was diagnosed with ornithine transcarbamylase (OTC) deficiency which means her body builds dangerous levels of ammonia that needed constant monitoring and a new liver was the only solution.

And now she already has her sights on the next games in Houston 2021.
