Our locum doc F4 Brad Chambers* and Sammy Bzeu, off Labour ward and Ward 4c, are back from Mexico after winning the World Medical Football Championships.

They were part of the all-conquering GB Medics' Team - and partially sponsored by our former ophthalmology consutant Teifi James.

They specialised in coming from behind in almost every round and beat the Czech Republic 2-1 in the final - after going 1-0 down.

Brad's girlfriend Louise Finn, who works in A&E, was there to cheer them on at the event in Cancun  - see below.

Brad scored a goal in the semi-final against Argentina to give them the lead but it ended 2-2 yet we won on penalties. They battled 30 degree heat and 90% humidity and needed intense rehydration as well as energy gels and ice cold towels and half-time.

Brad said: " There was a fantastic team spirit, a real never say die attitude and the largest contingent was Yorkshire-based doctors. It's an opportunity to meet doctors from all over the world and you get to play in world class facilities. We were at Barcelona's traning ground the last time in 2016."

Teifi James' Eyebag sponsored them and Brad says he's been really supportive.

Their route to glory was:

Sweden - lost 1-0

Ukraine 2-1

Venezuala 3-2 (coming from behind twice)

Brazil 2-1 after going behind 1-0

Argentina - 2-2 then win 5-3 on  penalties

Czechoslovakia - 2-1 after going down 1-0.

Doctors from 19 other countries took part and the event is the pinnacle of amateur medical football.  Brad says more players are needed and trials are held each October/November to keep the team fresh.

Brad is pictured second left and Sammy third left - both holding the trophy.
