Graduate nurse Steph Bates - due to start a full-time role in September - was excited to be involved in one of the first UK student-led health-check clinics at Huddersfield University's Open Day recently.

Steph told us " We checked blood pressure (BP), heart rate (HR) and O2 saturation levels on a drop-in basis for parents and students attending the open day - and we had 166 people get involved.

"We're looking forward to running another clinic in August at the Mirfield show. We'll have a double decker bus converted to a clinic where both BSc and MSc nurses (adult, mental health and learning disability nurses), BSc / MSc Physiotherapists, Occupation Therapists and Podiatrists can give health promotion advice and free health checks for the general public".

Steph added, "It's a really exciting time as these student-led clinics are some of the first of their kind in the UK and have great potential for the future".

Feedback on the day included:

  • Customer service was good and nice. Ready to help people, it’s a friendly environment. I felt so relaxed and happy with the service.
  • The volunteers were very polite and friendly. I enjoyed the experience and appreciate how the students and staff handled the visitors with care.
  • It’s great to give experience to the students and that their work will become part of a national/international study is interesting. Always good to keep a check on one’s health and wellbeing.
  • Very nice, felt very comfortable, it should be offered in more places
