It is everyone’s responsibility to look after all equipment used for patient care. It needs to be looked after so we can keep our patients safe and use our resources wisely.

If equipment is not cared for properly it can cost money to repair. This causes down time which means we cannot use it for patients and as a result it may put patient’s quality of care at risk. It also means staff may need to fix it and will spend less time with patients.

Here are some suggestions to avoid faulty equipment;

  • Ensure you have attended medical device training on beds and mattresses, so you know the correct way of strapping air mattresses to beds.
  • Ensure you check equipment is clear from the beds before moving any part of the bed.
  • Keep equipment power leads clear of wheels when moving.
  • STOP- if you notice a jerking movement or straining noise. Stop and check the area and do not carry on doing the task.
  • Keep bed away from the wall, so no damage to the wall or bed when moved.
  • Unplug the bed before moving the bed away from bed space.
