Ward manager Jan Calverley has been hailed as the most supportive boss ever...

Chief Nurse Jackie Murphy sprung the Star Award surprise on her after healthcare assistant Kirsteen Doherty nominated her for helping her through a very tough personal time. Triggered by a family episode years ago, Kirsteen was having difficulty coping.

Jan spotted the signs, asked Kirsteen how she was and has been there for her ever since.

Kirsteen said: “ I had gone very quiet at work and I also go tetchy and she noticed. I said I need to speak to you and she never asked why and we took it from there. She has been amazing.”

Kirsteen, with us since 2016, said many line managers were criticised for not being supportive but Jan deserved recognition for getting her to where she is now  and keeping her in work and feeling so much better.

She adds: “ Every shift she is in she asks me how I am. But she isn’t intrusive, she just asks. She told me my work isn’t affected and I just know she is there for me. I am so glad I am at work as that is a big help but I wouldn’t be where I am without her.”

Jan also suppoted her by arranging appointments at Occy Health and with a psychologist. She offered to accompany Kirsteen to them and texts her to keep in touch.

Kirsteen adds: “ I have never known anything like it. I have never known anyone so supportive.”

Jan said: " I only do what anybody would."

Our Chief Nurse Jackie Murphy made the presentation on Ward 2AB at CRH. She said:  " Jan’s nomination and award demonstrate her exemplary leadership and  how she lives the Trust value of one culture of compassionate care.

"I know that Kirsteen will not be the only colleague to have been cared for by Jan, the affect of her kindness was evident. What a role model !!! "
