Our second Schwartz Round will be held on Friday March 22nd with a varied line-up of colleagues sharing their experiences to inspire and support others.

This next event topic is "The day I made a difference".

Colleagues will talk about the emotional and social challenges they experience while they are caring for our patients.

Schwartz Rounds get hospital staff from all backgrounds together to talk about the non-clinical side of caring. They were developed following the death of Ken Schwartz (see image below) in 1995, a seemingly healthy non-smoker who died of lung cancer. Mr Schwartz set up the not-for-profit Schwartz Centre for Compassionate Healthcare prior to his death, to promote kindness and compassion in healthcare workers and the Centre continues to research and fund his vision to this day.

He believed that if healthcare providers do not receive support when they may have psychological and emotional issues from their day-to-day working then compassionate, high-quality, patient-focussed care may suffer.

Associate Director of Organisational Development, Ruth Mason, said: “Our new Schwartz Rounds are an additional staff health and wellbeing support, ultimately impacting the compassionate care we give to our patients.

"The Rounds give staff the time and a safe space to share their experiences with others. One of the benefits is often being able to breathe a sigh of relief knowing that they’re not alone in how they feel”.

One previous participant, said: "These sessions (Rounds) are a place where people who don’t usually talk about the heart of the work are willing to share their feelings and this in turn leads to a  dialogue that doesn't happen anywhere else in the hospital."

Read about the first Schwartz Round here, when Chemotherapy Sister, Bernie Beith, Chaplain George Spencer, Paediatrician Helen Armstrong and our Director of Finance Gary Boothby (picured) talked about their own interactions with a patient who had impacted on them.
