There have been some recent incidences where patients have developed heel pressure ulcers under leg bandages, so this week a reminder of the importance of checking under bandages.

Heels are particularly at risk in patients who have lower leg oedema, possible due to the weight and size of the limb.

Action: Colleagues should check under bandages as part of their routine skin inspection and swab any wounds on admission for MRSA.

Floating on a pillow or Repose wedge can reduce the risk of heel pressure ulcer development.

It is your responsibility to remove any dressings on admission or transfer, including leg bandages. This will allow you to thoroughly inspect the skin and document in the patient record. Please don’t forget the MRSA swabs and photography referral.
