There's triple celebrations at the moment for HRI wards 4 - elderly care, and 19 and 21-  our trauma and orthopaedic wards. All three have recently achieved silver Exemplar ward accreditation*.

The wards and in particular the ward managers and senior nursing team have worked really hard to achieve this award and have shown their passion and commitment to ensuring the wards provide excellent and high quality care to the patients.

The wards work closely together and the ward managers work collaboratively as a team to keep the wards moving forward and are always willing to invest in new ways of working to improve patient care and experience.

*We know that other wards are being assessed, so we'll make sure we share the results in a future edition of CHFT Weekly.

What is the Exemplar process?

The Exemplar process is completed by every ward. In a nutshell, it's a framework of measures we use to improve patient care and experience, using a range of outcomes and performance measures.

It is in place to help bring consistency and standardisation within ward teams and Emergency departments across the Trust.

The framework is built  around 14 standards such as pain management, pressure ulcers and medicines management to name a few. An assessor - usually a matron - visits a ward and observes care and speaks to colleagues and patients. They'll also talk to colleagues in the wider team, such as consultants, physios and pharmacy, to get a rounded view.

Quality indicators such as FLO audits, hand hygiene audits, friends and family results, complaints etc are also used as part of the process. Documentation is also reviewed as part of the process.
