Hello, my name is Michelle Speight

I have been married to Bob for 26 years. We have three children Matthew, Jonathan and Daniel and a black Labrador called Duke. My position is a Colorectal Stoma Care Specialist nurse.

Summarise your career background

I trained at HRI as a General nurse, after qualifying I worked for two-years on a general medical ward, I then continued my career working on a general surgical ward.  After a secondment in 1997 I was given the opportunity to work part time in stoma care. I continued my career working as a stoma care nurse and as a qualified nurse on the colorectal ward until 2008. I now work full time as a colorectal and stoma care nurse.

What is the highlight of your career so far?

Being appointed as a stoma/colorectal nurse and being part of a dedicated, supporting colorectal/stoma care team.

Sum up your role in three words

  • Supportive
  • Specialist
  • Approachable

What did you want to be when you were growing up?
I wanted to be a Charlie's Angel at the age of 8. I also wanted to be a home economics teacher. However, by the age of 15 I was a volunteer working in a nursing home and that's when I knew nursing was for me.

Who is your hero/heroine and why?
My heroine was my Grandma. She was born in 1911 and lived to be 100 years of age. She lived independently in her own home until she was 98. She was so much fun to be around, she always had a smile on her face and inspired me with her determination.

When you are not at work how do you relax?
I love to take Duke on country walks with friends and family, I enjoy going to the theatre.

What is your favourite place?

I love walking around Digley Reservoir and Hardcastle Craggs.  I love Bolton Abbey. You honestly can’t beat it - especially in the Autumn.

What would people be surprised to know about you?

Surprisingly, my first name isn’t Michelle.
