Two of our midwives are running the London Marathon for charity.

Selma Fitton and Dawn Dutton are fitting in the training for the race on April 26, between duties on the labour ward at CRH.It’s the second marathon for them both having completed the Edinburgh Marathon last year and the final few month’s training locally is tough going.

They are running the long runs together once a week and shorter runs separately when they aren’t at work.

Selma, said: “We are progressing the long runs and are up to 14 miles at the moment and aiming to get to the required 22 miles. But it’s very tough now.”

They want to beat 4 hours 20 mins – the time of the Edinburgh run – and they are aiming to raise money for their charities. Selma supports Diabetes UK and Dawn is backing Whizz Kidz. Both missed out on the marathon ballot process and are running for charity instead and so have fundraising to complete ahead of the race.

Selma added: “I am taking every opportunity to raise money. I sold raffles tickets at a meeting at work and am taking every opportunity.” She will be wearing a photo of her father Frank Doherty who sadly passed away during a very difficult last year for her family.

Dawn, said: “The fundraising is as challenging as the training runs. We are trying everything from cakes sales to car boot sales… we need all the help we can get.”
