Colleagues delivering care for inpatients and adult cases have until mid-December to complete a new national training course for National Early Warning Score (NEWS)2.

HRI's SAU staff nurse Stacey Sutcliffe went to Leeds to hear more about the changes to the new early warning system for our acutely ill patients.

Stacey, pictured 4th left, said: "I went along from SAU so I could bring back information of the changes to the team. It made us realise we are already really good at escalating patients if they deteriorate and it was a really interesting day".

Once NEWS2 training is completed, colleagues need to self-declare their competency in ESR (a certificate can be printed).

All the information and guidance is available on the intranet. See: Training/Essential Safety Training/Role Specific/NEWS2

More about NEWS2:

NHS England (NHSE) and NHS Improvement (NHSI) have endorsed it to become the early warning system for identifying acutely ill patients, including those with sepsis, in hospitals in England.

The updated version of NEWS2 includes:

  • a new section on the NEWS2 chart for scoring oxygen saturation for patients with hypercapnic (often termed 'type 2') respiratory failure, to ensure the most appropriate prescription of extra oxygen if required
  • recognition of the importance of new confusion (or delirium) as a sign of potentially important clinical deterioration
  • a strong emphasis on the potential use of the NEWS to identify serious sepsis in patients with known or suspected infection, or at high risk of infection. Patients with a NEWS of 5 or more are at serious risk of clinical deterioration and a poor clinical outcome, and need urgent assessment and intervention.

Nerve Centre and EPR will have new observation charts by 1st January at the latest - this won't affect your training which needs to be complete by then.
