Hello My Name Is.....Dr Sue Crossland. She is our new Director of Medical Education (DME) She's mum-of-four, her hero is Iron Man, and her camper van is called Skippy. She's the latest in our Hello My Name Is....
In post, Sue wants to ensure that the Trust provides the best education it can to our medical staff - this includes undergraduates, doctors and physician associates. She also would like to use technology more widely across the breadth of medical education, and also try and get some more formal junior doctor involvement into the Medical Education team. What is your position?
I am a Consultant Acute Physician based mainly at Calderdale Royal, and have just been appointed as the new Director for Medical Education.
Tell us about your career background?
I was a research scientist before I went back to Medical School. I am the President Elect of the Society for Acute Medicine and take over as President from our own Dr Scriven in the autumn of 2019
What are the best bits about your job?
Acute Medicine is the most fun job ever! Every day is different, and I love the fact that you have to know a lot about everything. It is the best place in the hospital to learn, and I still learn something new every day.
What is the highlight of your career so far?
Becoming a Consultant. My mum was convinced I would never get a ‘proper job’!!

What did you want to be when you were growing up?
A vet!
Who is your hero/heroine and why?
Iron Man. He is super-clever, mega-rich, funny-and he saves the world
When you are not at work how do you relax?
I bake –a lot! I draw, I camp in my 1973 VW camper van - Skippy. I read at least a book a week and I walk my dog.
What would people be surprised to know about you?
It is a little known fact that my PhD is on Molecular Evolution - and that I used the DNA from two species of sea snails. It was at one time, the shortest scientific PhD in the University of Leeds library.
