Maternity EPR at CHFT has just celebrated its 3rd birthday. It's been a great three years - with further improvements due soon so women will be able to access their own maternity health records. We're one of only six trusts to receive funding for this from NHS Digital.

To celebrate, staff enjoyed cake, gifts and praise for their continued support. It was a time to reflect as well as recognise that Maternity EPR has gone from strength-to-strength.

The beauty is that maternity EPR recognises all care delivered to women from booking the pregnancy to the time they are discharged to the Health Visitor when a pregnancy is closed from an Obstetric viewpoint.

The fantastic reporting functionality also has huge benefits for our patients:

  • Maternity Dashboard which looks at local data and compares across the region and nationally – this reporting has directly affected care delivered to our women and changes to practice for the better.
  • Maternity Data Set – Information pulled from the System for National Data to assist in achieving better outcomes of care for mothers, babies and children. Our rates for submission are above 99% consistently month-on-month.
  • Omission Reports - generated for clinical staff to use on a shift-by-shift basis to review records and highlight omissions in records that require completion. This has given staff the ability to manage their own records.

The team are currently working on using the system to further support staff in reviewing care delivered to women according to their clinical area. This will in turn allow them to use the information to review and celebrate, or change their practice if and as required supporting the Personal Development Review (PDR) process.

Maternity EPR midwife Carol Gregson said; "Because Maternity EPR has been under the spotlight both locally and nationally, we have had the privilege to host several site visits from other Trusts. This means we have also become a reference site for the supplier K2. This means they consider us specialists in our area, which shows how much work we've all put in to the system.

"We have also been awarded NHS Digital Financial assistance for the progression of the Online Notes Access for our women - and we're only one of six trusts in the country to receive this funding.  It's a project we never thought would happen, but with NHS Digital's support we can make the changes so our women will have access to their records and be able to view updates on their pregnancy by the end of summer.

"And whilst we're celebrating, we haven't stopped still with regard to Digital Transformation. We are continuing to develop the system. All of this work could not have taken place without our management team and our wonderful maternity and obstetric staff with their sterling work in adopting and utilising the system to its full potential".
