Now it's getting and lighter and warmer (well, we hope so) our Switch off Squad  (SoS) campaign is having another purge on left on-lights and heating which are no longer necessary.

The SoS will be going round CRH tomorrow teatime to see where areas have left their lights on or heating on especially with it being the longer Bank Holiday weekend.

They want to remind colleagues to:

  • Switch off lights in storerooms or areas that will be unused over the weekend
  • Turn thermostats down over the weekend
  • Make sure that windows are shut to avoid heating fighting cold air outside.

Switch Off Don, aka Dump It Don, said: "At this time of year we need to minimise energy use by using as much daylight as possible and try everything to stop buildings overheating. It's that cross over time and with prudent switching on and off there is capacity to save an awful lot of money and get into good habits for the summer months!"

We know we can do it. In October, November and December  last year when the SoS's campign  first swung into action we used 97,000  less units of electricity - compared to the same months the year before  - at CRH and 71,000 less units of electricity at HRI.

This meant we saved £20,000 worth of electricity by using machinery more economically and the switching off lights and equipment when not needed.

One example is, if 10 fluorescent tubes in one office area on one light switch are left on over the  Bank Holiday Weekend it would cost us £7.83 from Friday to Tuesday morning. Multiply that across hospitals and community sites and  it could add up to thousands.
