This week as planned the CQC inspection teams have been back on site looking at our four core services. Ward manager Joanne Reed shares the experience the teams on the Children's ward at CRH had on Tuesday.

"I feel really confident we gave a good account of our services. The day started with interviews with key team members from Families and Specialist Services (F&SS). We were asked to share what we were most proud of and what we thought could be improved in our area.

"They asked various questions, including about our nursing models across our sites and where we're up to with our risks on the risk register. We were able to share a plan with them of what we're doing to mitigate those risks.

"The team then moved onto the wards - they were really approachable and forthcoming. Plus they were really keen to find out what we do at CHFT that other Trusts don't, so we were able to share information about our three workforce models (our seasonal staffing models for different times of the year) and our four hour acuity data, which tells us when patients have increased dependancy, so we can escalate their care.

"I'm massively proud of how the team pulled together, as well as the support I've had personally from the management team and want to say a big thank you to everyone involved".

Activity next week – week commencing 26 March

On Wednesday 28th the following activities will be taking place:

Our Execute Directors will be interviewed by NHS Improvement in what is called our Use of Resources inspection. This forms part of the formal well-led inspection process, even though it is being carried out by NHSI.

There are also two sets of focus groups run by the CQC aimed at two core staff groups: our Consultants and our Black, Asian and Minority and Ethnic (BAME) colleagues. Colleagues in these groups will be sent a letter from the CQC explaining more, and how they can contribute if they can’t attend. If you are in one of these groups and would like to take part, the times and locations are below (this will also be in the letter):

  • Open session for BAME staff group, 3 – 4pm, Discussion Room 3, Learning Centre, HRI
  • Open session for consultants, 5 – 6pm, Discussion Room 1, Learning Centre, HRI

Week commencing 2 April

The final stage of the well-led inspection takes place between Tuesday 3rd and Thursday 5th April. This new approach will see the inspection team carrying out interviews with invited colleagues. The interviews will be planned with key colleagues across CHFT and you will be notified this week if the CQC have asked us to set up an interview with you.

Please be prepared for unannounced inspections over and above this activity

The inspection teams may visit any area at any point right up to the 5th April. Initial feedback for teams working in clinical areas has suggested we need to focus on how we appropriately store and administer medicines, monitor fridge temperatures and manage the care of patients with safeguarding, mental health and capacity issues.

Our CQC pages have lots of useful information.
