We ran our very first ASCME "Acute Simulated Core Medical Emergencies” course at CHFT on Monday. And it was such a success we'll be running more in future.
This is a Health Educated England accredited and funded course for regional trainees, normally run in the teaching hospitals Leeds and Bradford.
Clinical skills & simulation technician Caren Reid told us more about what and who was involved.
Six candidates were each given a simulated scenario, and the SIM suite (simulation suite) was set up with three beds, each with a patient or anxious relative.
The doctors had to deal with all three patients or relative at the same time as well as dealing with other external factors such as junior doctors calling for help and advice, labs or other departments calling with results, or relatives demanding answers.
The situations meant all their patients were cared for whilst making diagnosis, decisions, directing the nursing staff as well as hands on treatment.
The training mimics a real ward environment and the candidates did brilliantly. It certainly makes us appreciate what they have to do on a daily basis.
We were fortunate to have the Clinical Educators on board who played the nursing staff – Joanne, Teresa & Tiffany.
The lovely Alexandra Keaskin from A & E played a patient, along with our very own award winning actress (she missed her calling!), Angela Hope and our apprentice technician Ellis Burley.
Along with Dr Suneeta Teckchandani , Dr Alexander Hashimi and Dr Samaya Aya, who all either played a doctor in the scenarios either over the phone or in the sim suite, drove the manikin and all debriefed the candidates after each scenario.
It was a fantastic day the candidates feedback was excellent and we have plans to now run this course three or four times a year.
