The Companions Scheme is finding its feet and three months since they started they have been well-received by patients and their carers.

The scheme exists to provide company for those who are on their own at the end of life or where families find it difficult to be with them.

In one case two companions worked together to support a dying patient. His only daughter had a husband who was also ill, and required a lot of support. It was a relief to the daughter to know that someone was quietly sitting with her dad.

George Spencer, co-ordinating chaplain, said: " Our companions are just that. They simply keep a person company in a gentle and compassionate manner. We were limiting ourselves to certain wards but now feel the scheme should go Trust-wide.”

A new round of Companion training is planned for April/May to be delivered by Simon Habergham, a qualified counsellor and lay chaplain, and CHFT’s End of Life trainers.

For information about engaging a Companion for a patient – or to ask about the training – please contact George or Sue at the Chaplaincy via either hospital switchboard.’
