World Kidney Day (WKD) 8th March 2018
Our Consultant Nephrologist Dr Mansoor Ali is reminding colleagues about the importance of preventing acute kidney injury. This year WKD falls on the same day as International Women's Day and there's a special emphasis for that reason.
Chronic Kidney Disease (CKD) affects approximately 195 million women worldwide and in the UK, CKD is more common in women than men for reasons more complicated and less well understood. Women have additional risks during and after pregnancy and pregnancy related kidney complications.
Uncontrolled Diabetes and high blood pressure are the biggest causes of kidney failure. Around 64,000 people in the UK are being treated for end stage kidney disease.
For patients ensure hydration, seek help when unwell especially if you have a kidney problem, ensure you have consulted your doctors before taking over the counter pills and medications and engage in self-learning and shared care. (insert below image no.3)
