Andy Cross from X-ray at CRH is about to embark on the cycle of his life after his baby son was born six weeks early and needed special care intensive with us.

He and his friends are cycling from Geneva to Barcelona in the space of five days at the end of June.

The route is a total 620 miles (900km) therefore it will turn to just under or over 100 miles a day – depending on sore bums!

He will be joined by Halifax friends who live in the Swiss city of Geneva who work in a school.

Andy volunteered for the bike ride a number of months ago and after his son needed a stay in our special baby unit it all become clear what they would raise the money for.

Andy’s son Jacob was born under an emergency C-section when he was six- weeks early and he was on a ventilator for three weeks in the ICU part of the Special Care Baby unit.

Radiographer Andy, said: “I am really excited because it means so much to me. I think it’s going to push me through it because I know I am not a cyclist so it's going to take a fair bit of time and willpower and staying power to get through to Barcelona. The fact that people have been so generous has pushed me more”.

So now the team are fundraising for a piece of equipment for the Special Care Baby unit called a Vapotherm.

The total raised so far is €2,075 – Please note the donations made will be in Euros as most of the fundraising is done in Geneva.

Vapotherm is a piece of equipment that can reduce the amount of time a baby needs to stay is in hospital by helping ventilating the breathing. The company which makes them are sponsoring the team with T-shirts and specialist cycle-wear.

Andy said: We are very grateful for their support."
