The Ambulatory Unit moved into its new home at HRI at the beginning of January 2017 and we have seen it grow enormously from a four bedded bay on AMU into a fully functioning department serving patients seven days a week.

It's a real achievment as in more than  90% of cases, the patient goes home from ambulatory care, so avoids having to be admitted.

Lead nurse Kate Crowther,  said: "The staff have been amazing at accepting all the change and challenges that have come during the past 12 months, it is only a small team so a huge thanks goes to them for playing their part in this success."

In the previous 12 months AAU treated around 3000 patients, from January 2017 to mid-January  2018 we have seen 4719 patients, nearly hitting the 5000 mark!

We receive excellent feedback from our patients about the nice environment,  the quick and effective service, and of course the lovely staff.

Dr Sarah Hoye, hailed the AAU as "invaluable". She said: “The AAU provides an invaluable service which facilitates patient care without hospital overnight stay. The spectrum of illnesses managed has broadened, as has the ability to deliver investigations and treatment in a time effective manner.

“Think home first” is a motto that the AAU team strive for. Statistics tell us the area takes >25% of the acute take, and discharges ~90+% of those seen.

"We should be proud of the turnover. AAU considerably helps patient flow, frees up beds and assists admission avoidance.”
