Hello my name is… Manohar Kini, our new Stroke Physician.
He did his CCT training in stroke medicine at Sheffield and was in a substantive stroke consultant post at Doncaster for more than five years before moving to Calderdale and Huddersfield NHS FT last year for family reasons. In training, he went through most of Yorkshire from Pontefract to Wakefield to Leeds and now the most beautiful Calder Valley.
What is your position?
Consultant in Stroke medicine at Calderdale Royal Hospital
Tell us about your career background.
Basic medical and postgraduate medical training from India. I have a keen interest in training future doctors, and especially so in undergraduate assessments, interview selection and trainee supervision, apart from involvement as principal investigator in some stroke related research studies.
In view of significant service development and contribution to education and research, I was fortunate to receive RCP fellowship by criteria and clinical excellence award. I also hold Honorary Senior Clinical Lecturer role at Academic Medical Division, University of Sheffield
What are the best bits about your job?
I am in a position to provide holistic medical care across the whole stroke spectrum from hyperacute to acute to rehabilitation stroke medical care, apart from dealing with general medical problems in stroke and providing preventive stroke care. Improving quality in stroke and a special interest in spasticity management in stroke and non-stroke conditions are my favourite areas
What is the highlight of your career so far?
My keen interest and medical training in spasticity management led me to develop the botulinum stroke spasticity (and other spasticity) service. This service was well received by patients and the medical community alike, with good satisfaction scores. This was at a difficult time with service cuts and limitations
Sum up your role in three words.
Challenging, exciting, rewarding
What did you want to be when you were growing up?
Medical instruments / equipment designer or a car mechanic. I’m sometimes glad I didn’t become one. The number of gadgets I took apart and couldn’t put back in one piece are endless and must have cost my parents a fortune. But in the process, I got a good working knowledge of these mechanical instruments
When you are not at work, how do you relax?
Spend time on my folding bicycle (which was mostly in my car boot till recently). I like going for long walks
What is your favourite place?
Anywhere coastal, should be somewhat warm and not too crowded. Coconut water is a must for cooling down
