HRI's Ward 15 rallied round to help patient  Cyril Haldenby, from Halifax, celebrate his 100th in style and with his family.

They laid on a cake and invited in all his family for the event.

Cyril was born and grew up in Cleckheaton and served in the war as a despatch rider. He came back home as he was injured and taken up to Pinderfields.

Devoting his life to the Salvation Army, Cyril moved to Australia with his wife Mary in 1966 for 12 years and they ran a children’s home together in Tasmania. They also had a son together, Roland and two grandchildren Adam and Holly.

In 1978, Cyril retired and they came back to the UK. Still volunteering for the Salvation Army and was a Band Master playing the tenor horn, cornet and slide trumpet  -  90th birthday pressie. He met his Margaret through the Salvation Army in 1980, as she was a ‘Sick Visitor’ in the Salvation Army and tended to Mary.

In March 2006, Cyril and Margaret got married in Halifax.

As soon as  our nutritionist Michelle found out Cyril was turning 100, she was straight on the phone to  patient catering manager Adrian Brown to get a birthday cake organised. 

Sister Rachel Garside, said: "It was lovely to be able to do this for Cyril, his wife Margaret and his family. There was a lovely atmosphere and everybody had a great time and sang Happy Birthday."

 His family brought in his congratulatory telegram for the Queen, the Prime Minister and the Mayor of Calderdale. see attached.
