It had to be heard to be believed...... and you can too thanks to a CHFT Weekly video special.

At 2.30 pm yesterday, as they have done twice a day this week, colleagues came together and assumed their positions for their first ever Ward 7 - the Greenlea chemotherapy unit.

They belted out Away in a Manger Jingle Bells and We Wish you a Merry Christmas, as they have been doing twice a day all week.

The idea came from a patient on the unit receiving  chemotherapy treatment who suggested to staff caring for him that if everyone who learned an instrument as a child had a few weeks to practice they would be able to play a few Xmas carols.

And so the band was formed.

Oncology nurses, healthcare and oncology consultants all with different levels of musical ability performed much to the enjoyment of other colleagues and patients.

The instruments include piano, flute, guitar, trombone, viola, tin whistle, indian flute, ukulele, oboe and a percussion set of bells, triangle and cymbals.  

Staff nurse Audrey Lister,  said: "It has caused a great deal of cheer with the patients and staff alike on the unit, we have had a rehearsal and everyone was looking forward to the sessions this week."

Doctor Nick Brown has played the trombone since middle school and currently plays with Huddersfield Windband. He said: " It is nice to be able to do this - especially at Christmas."

Audrey, added: "It has to be said some sessions are better than others but we have all totally enjoyed it and we hope our patients and their families have as well."
