A  grateful family has emailed CHFT to single out nurse Marti Fernandez-Martinez for the way he cared for their mum in A&E and resus.

We've printed what they said in full and  - below - and we also took the opportunity to find out what brings a nurse from Catalonia to Kirklees - and it's not the weather!!

Here's the family's letter about their experience* (we've left out identifying names).

"My mum, was admitted via ambulance and received amazing care from the paramedics, doctors and nurses. Communication was great towards me and my Dad and we were left confident she was in good hands, despite being on death's door.

"Marti was the nurse who saw to my mum in resus and did an amazing job. He was hands on, attentive and obviously a very caring and professional individual. He worked tirelessly for hours on end preserving her life and even wiped up bloody vomit with a smile.

"The nurses finally persuaded him to take a break and eat something, which he reluctantly did, for just 10 minutes before rushing back to his patient.

"My mum was transported to HRI via ambulance and he insisted he came in the ambulance with her. We met him at the other end where she had removed her cannula and sprayed him with blood, yet still he smiled and gave her 100% of his efforts.

"All nurses who have looked after my mum have been amazing but Marti especially stood out to us.

"It would mean a lot if someone could extend our thanks to him and that his hard work is recognised by his superiors.

"My mum  doesn't remember her night in resus but I'll never forget the kindness of the staff there."

More about Marti...

Where are you from? Girona (pictured) in Catalonia, Spain.

What made you come over to the UK? I came over for work.  There are jobs in Spain but it is not the same as in England.

How long have you been working here? For three years.

What do you like about being here? Definitely not the weather, especially compared to warm Spain! I like it a lot here. I love to travel and working in the UK allows me to do that a lot more especially as I'm on bank. I think that everybody should travel if you get the chance and also work abroad at least once if you can. I love the British culture and it helps me develop as a person.

Have your colleagues been supportive? They've been fantastic, everybody is really nice and it's not just because I'm Spanish haha! I've always felt included in the team and welcome at CHFT.

Are you going home for Christmas? Yes, I'm very excited and it'll be great to see my family and friends. I fly over on the 21st December and come back on the 4th of January.

Have you bought any Yorkshire themed pressies for anyone? Ha yes! Those bulbs you all put on your Christmas trees. I've got some of them this year. I've also been to York Cathedral. I really love it there and bought people little figurines and stuff. Anything that's UK cultural stuff.
