Our Trust has just performed a kidney biopsy - previously only done in Leeds for our patients.

Dr Ali would like to thank everyone involved in looking after a patient - Rachel Smyth -  who presented with Acute Kidney Injury (AKI) secondary to vasculitis. She had recently been diagnosed with pulmonary vasculitis a condition which causes multi-system inflammation of the blood vessels affecting several organs including kidneys.

She had to be admitted as her bloods tests indicated significant renal involvement and stage 3 AKI.

Initially Dr Ali was initially keen to transfer her to Leeds for urgent in-patient renal biopsy which would help in further management and prognostication including preparing for dialysis should she have needed it acutely.

However there was significant bed pressure in Leeds which meant that our patient could not have been transferred immediately. So Dr Ali decided to carry out the renal biopsy in-house -  a procedure which has not attempted at CHFT before.

Dr Ali, said: "This is where "personalised care" comes into play in order to provide the best possible and optimal care to patients. She was informed of the procedure and it was also explained that,  although not attempted usually here, it would be performed by our experienced interventional radiologist Dr Chalam Viswanathan.

"I would like to thank Dr Viswanathan for his support, and Dr Padmini Prasad/ Dr Deep Arora - Consultant Histopathologists (Leeds) who kindly agreed to report the biopsy. Thanks also to Dr Yaqoob Ghumro and Dr Vicky Lancaster from ward 6 and the nursing staff in the radiology department and  on ward 6 for ensuring the best possible care provided safely pre and post procedure.

"Above all, a huge thank you to our patient, Rachel, for believing in us and agreeing for having the procedure done locally. This surely paves a pathway to considering carrying out future renal biopsies locally."
