Our A&E consultant Ed Walker has been at Portcullis House in Westminster in his capacity as one of the country's leading clinicians on carbon monoxide (CO).
He is pictured with Huddersfield MP Barry Sheerman at the event where a new report he has co-authored was unveiled called Carbon Monoxide Poisoning: saving lives, advancing treatment – A call for action across the healthcare sector.
Dr Walker has been involved in the subject for about 20 years is now on the medical advisory group of the All Parliamentary Carbon Monoxide Group (APPCOG). He is also the lead on CO at the Royal College of Emergency Medicine. The APPCOG has released various reports over the years and the latest one is pictured.
He said: "I came across stories time and time again of people who were seriously poisoned by this common gas, but went mis-diagnosed in the earlier stages - flu, ‘a virus’, ‘chronic fatigue’ that sort of thing.
"I am trying to raise awareness among medical practitioners. For example, if doctors are presented with more than one person in the same household with the same symptoms (headache, nausea, dizziness, ‘flu’-like symptoms) inevitably the blame is put on a ‘virus’, Nobody ever asks about the central heating system, or a dodgy gas fire."
