We have taken delivery of our first ultrasound for rheumatology.

It was pioneered in Leeds  and we are happy that we are joining others in West Yorkshire to acquire a machine.

Ultrasound has been used in rheumatology for diagnosis and monitoring treatment of inflammatory arthritis. The machine helps in diagnosis of inflammation arthritis (rheumatoid and similar conditions) in early stages by showing inflammation when a clinical examination can be normal.

It also means that patients can be started on treatment sooner preventing the possibility of joint damage and improving patient outcomes. The machine, based at Acre Mills, is a £25,000 investment with major funding from rheumatology charitable funds to improve the quality of care in rheumatology.

The images (see photo) provided by the machine - a Siemens Acuson NX3 Elite - highlight the presence of inflammation.

Dr. Omer Sharif has led on this project. He said: " The whole team has worked together with our Clinical Lead for Rheumatology, Dr. Cheryl Fernandes  and Dr. Hala Sadik, with invaluable support from Dr. Ashwin Verma, the management team and Department of Radiology."
