Hello my name is Emily, I am newly qualified and have just finished my three years at Huddersfield University. Throughout my training most of my placements have been at HRl with one in the community.

During my training I had a part time job at Sainsbury's and on bank caring in the community. This filled up my spare time and gave me further experience when I wasn't on placement and had time off from uni. I live at home with my mum, dad and younger sister Olivia who is still at school. I have 3 sisters including Olivia, Natalie is a physiotherapist in the community in Calderdale and Shannon cares in the community.

I always wanted to become a nurse from a young age my Grandma worked in theatres at HRI for years and growing up I always looked up to her. During my college placement I went to a busy medical elderly ward and really enjoyed it. I had a lot of time for the patients, we deal with dementia in our family so I know the struggles people go through and how to care for them.

I wasn't very academic at school but enjoyed the practical work. I went to Huddersfield New College where I studied my A levels to get into University. On the day of my interview for University I had the the wrong time written down and already managed to miss the first halve of the interview - whoops! I thought I'd have no chance. So when I got the conditional offer letter through the post I was shocked. Now here I am at the end of my training so grateful and happy to have a career in something I love.

What is your position?
Staff Nurse

Summarise your career background?
I had a nursing placement on gastro, really enjoyed the range of patients and conditions, found it really interesting and thought it would be a good place to start my career in a place that interested me and offered me the experience I needed. Gastro involves prevention diagnosis and treatment of gastro and hepatic diseases.

What is the highlight of your career so far?
My placements I have been very lucky with the range of placements I've had. I learnt so much on gastro and said I'd always come back to work here. I also enjoyed my last placement at Kirkwood Hospice within the palliative care setting I learnt so much about palliative care and life limiting conditions. Also knowing you can make a difference to your patients and their families.

Sum up your role in three words?
Busy, rewarding, compassionate

What did you want to be when you were growing up?
Coincidently, a nurse!

Who is your hero and why?
My mum she has supported me through my training when I've needed it. She always thinks of others and puts others before herself.

When you are not at work how do you relax?
When I'm not working I like going out for tea and drinks catching up with my friends who are also busy with full-time jobs now. I also like to spend time with my family.

What is your favourite place?
My happy place is on a hot beach I love the Greek islands and the Canary Islands just because you can almost guarantee the weather and I go very soon!

What would people be surprised to know about you?
People would be surprised that I am actually a nurse! I used to hate the sight of blood and be absolutely terrified of hospitals even just going to visit people made me feel on edge.

Twitter/Facebook?
I use Facebook to see pictures and mainly to keep in touch with my family and friends that don't live close by.
