Back in the day when nurses had paper hats and silver buckles, Mandy started training as a nurse in 1978 at the Northern General in Sheffield.
Once Mandy Mellor qualified she started working on the male surgical ward in Sheffield and was living in shared nursing housing which was a blast (more like party central!!).
Through a friend of a friend Mandy met David and young love blossomed as she then moved HRI in 1983 to work on the ENT ward. After this, Mandy then went on to train as a midwife for a couple of yeasr. Although this must have left Mandy a bit on the broody side as then left work to have her own 2 boys for 8 years to be a full time mum. But then didn’t stay away too long and came back to work in the out-patients at HRI in 1998 as a staff nurse.
Mandy then moved to help start up the Bowel Cancer Screening Programme (BCSP) within Calderdale, Kirklees and Wakefield in 2009 working as a specialist screening practitioner and since last year Mandy has formally been the lead SSP.
Over the years Mandy has had lots of good experiences during her career and loved all of the new born babies. Although one thing that will always stick in Mandy’s memory as she said is the “little old men on the surgical wards who were full of Yorkshire humour”
Over the years Mandy has worked with some great staff along the way which is what she’ll miss the most. “These are the wonderful people who keep this hospital going and make patients’ lives better”.
Now retirement calls, the Premier League is here for Mandy and her HTAFC season ticket! Along with a lot more travelling with David who’s also retired they plan on doing some travelling. Looking forward to just jetting off and not having to think about coming back.
Phillipa Gilbert, a colleague on the ward said: “Mandy Mellor is one of the most fair, honest, committed and reliable lead colleagues I have ever had the pleasure to work with, and she will be sorely missed in the Bowel Cancer Screening team.”
Bon Voyage Mandy and have a ball!!
