A  charity cricket match earlier this month between  consultants and registrars from across Yorkshire raised £1,050 for St Gemma’s Hospice.

The registrars gained a massive victory by 10 wickets on the day! For all the stats see the  full match report below.

Syed Bokhari,  now at York but at HRI from October 2016 – April 2017 in trauma and orthopaedics for Prof Chakrabarty and Mr Sidhom (Absolute legends, is how he describes them!),  led the registrars  and HRI's Jim Parker was the consultants' captain.

Syed said: "  Both teams played in great spirt and it was a fantastic day for everyone involved. The decision to bat and then to get out the prize wicket of Mr Ed Britton of York District hospital on the second ball of the innings by myself was a massive turning point. We knew he was one of their best players who played to a very high standard. If he had stayed in then we would have been troubled and the result may have been different. However, by getting this wicket, it boosted us and we were fearless. We threw ourselves on the pitch and really put the pressure on the consultants. They did play well and set a decent score, but that was no match for our opening batsmen who stayed at the crease, endured the sledging and kept focus to beat the consultants by 10 wickets.

"Credit to the registrars who came together, practiced and then performed on the day. Also, a massive credit to the consultants in dusting off their cobwebs, being great sports and for putting up a fight. Next year will be different, they may be taking some of the players who would have become consultants then and so the pressure will be on us, and in time we will see the average age of their team decrease. So, for now, let us enjoy this victory against those who had a few creaky joints and practice harder for next year's match.!"

The Orthopaedic Network sponsored the event by paying for all expenses including the venue, bouncy castle, food and refreshments, meaning all money raised on the day went to St Gemma’s Hospice.

Our Mr Jim Parker, a lower limb arthroplasty surgeon based in Huddersfield captained the consultants.

Here's the full teams and a  detailed match report from Syed:

"The toss was won by Bokhari and elected to field which proved to be the right decision as on the second ball of the game the first wicket of Britton was taken by Bokhari. This was an important wicket as Britton was the consultant’s prize batsman. This piled the pressure on the consultant team but they battled on with Munir who managed to make 35 before being given out for LBW from Mokawem’s spin bowling. Ramaswamy supported Munir but succumb to a run out for 22, but that was before Metcalf was run out on a duck following a miscommunication between Ramaswamy and Metcalf. Nisar stabled the ship and got the first six of the game and it felt that thereon the consultants would start to pile on the runs. However, an important wicket fell by Fishlock who drew Nisar into a shot that was lofted and caught by Jain. There the Registrars knew that the tide had turned.

"The next partnership was from Rao and the captain Parker who fought against the persistent fielding of the Registrars. An important wicket then fell when Rao was stuck between the wicket with Bokhari’s direct hit of the stumps running him out and Parker was stumped behind not that long after from Jeyapalan’s attentive keeping. Cohen and Ali kept the runs ticking but they finished on 152 after the allotted 25 overs. Bokhari bowled a superb spell of 9 runs for 1 wicket after 5 overs.

"The target was set of approximately 6 runs per over which Bokhari was certain his batting line-up would achieve. Mokawem was dealt a series of demon balls from Nisar, Munir and Britton but it was to no avail. Mokawem, partnered by Zaman reached the target with 6 overs to spare giving the registrars a fantastic win of 10 wickets. Mokawem achieved 107 not out, with Zaman on 39 not out. Zaman hit 5 fours, and Mokawem hit 16 fours and 5 sixes making him without doubt the Man of the Match.

"Bokhari instructed his team to take to the field to appreciate the contribution of his batsmen and honoured them by creating a tunnel for his players with his team bats. They kept this for the consultants to show respect to their courageous efforts in trying to defeat their younger rivals."
