Our Urogynaecology Team is celebrating success after achieving a top national accreditation, recognising the quality of care for our patients. The Accreditation implies that our Service is amongst the best there can be.
It was awarded after a British Society of Urogynaecology Unit Accreditation (BSUG) site visit last week by two assessors from the BSUG which followed a previously submitted paper assessment.
Dr Yi Ling Chan, Urogynaecology Lead, said the achievement for the Unit - which is a relatively new team - was a stunning all-round achievement considering where they started from only a few years ago.
Dr Chan said: "This is a Unit Accreditation for the whole team. Our team is a relative baby in terms of maturity so to get this shows how far we have come in such a short time and that is down to team work - teamwork within the Unit and teamwork with our colleagues.”
She added, "We passed with flying colours and this is something we can all be proud of. The assessors only had praises for the Service and the progress we continued to make since the initial paper assessment."
She said the inspectors were impressed with the team spirit demonstrated throughout their day with us.
They also singled out the Pelvic Floor MDT Database we have pioneered and even suggested we should patent it as other Trusts may want to buy it!
She praised the support the team received from Women’s Health Physiotherapy, Continence Advisory Services and from the Colorectal and Urology colleagues.
One of the other highlighted areas was our success in the Obstetric Anal Sphincter Injury (OASI) Care Bundle, led by Mr Acharyya, our local Champion. We were selected as one of the 16 Trusts nationwide to participate in the national pilot Quality Improvement Initiative. Implementation of the Care Bundle has already shown a trend in reduction of the number of obstetric anal sphincter injuries in our Unit.
She added: "When we started, we did not have a lot of resources such as a Urogynaecology Nurse Specialist. The Unit has grown in staff terms and now has MDT, robust care pathway and evidence based protocols and guidelines for pelvic floor dysfunction.
"I would like to thank each and everyone one of the team for all the help, support and advice you have given to make things possible. We are also grateful to ex-colleagues who have contributed but are no longer with us.”
