Colleagues flocked to the kitchen on ward 21 at HRI to watch as ‘gob-smacked’ healthcare assistant Vivienne Rowan accepted her award from  our CEO Owen Williams on a surprise presentation.

Nurse Manager Amanda Waring nominated Viv for the Star Award. She said: " Viv goes above and beyond when delivering patient care. Her positive, happy outlook and uplifting attitude is continually featured in feedback by patients and relatives as a positive element of their hospital experience.

“She sings to patients and relatives to lift their mood, has a laugh with them, and by doing so, develops a rapport that motivates them to participate in their rehabilitation.”

Viv added: "It adds a little entertainment and positivity to a patient’s day. It’s usually songs in my head at the time or older songs for the patients. They always seem to enjoy it.”

Amanda added: “A patient who had had a long stay in hospital, which had an impact on his mood, found that being cared for by Viv lifted his day and made his stay in hospital bearable.”

Ward Clerk, Jacqui Firth, added: “We have so many people tell us how much they appreciate the care and attention you (Viv) have given them. The feedback and acknowledgement from those that you care for is why you’ve got that award”

Viv Rowan said “I am so shocked.  All of the people who work on ward 21 are amazing and it really is a team effort. I do really love working here especially the care side of my job. To care for someone’s family member knowing that I can help make their time here a little more enjoyable.”

Amanda Waring, said: “Viv doesn’t see how truly amazing she is. That’s why she deserves this, no matter what we can count on her. She is fantastic.”
