Our shuttle bus driver Barry Ackroyd is back in work today after a lucky escape during a terrifying four-car vehicle smash on Acre Street.
He was driving back on his last run when the accident happened at about 9.45 am yesterday morning.
Two loud bangs could be heard in nearby buildings and staff ran out to help. Barry's shuttle-bus was hit by a white taxi minibus coming towards him on two wheels. If our bus had been further down Acre Street it would have been a head-on crash.
Barry, said: " I saw it all in slow motion - like in a Jason Bourne movie. It was coming towards me and there was just nowhere for me to go. I honestly thought f****** ****, this is going to hurt. I just leaned over to get out of the way."
Our bus was hit on the side with two windows smashed. The airbag went off leaving Barry with burns (see photo) and a sore throat and cough. Luckily the bus was empty. Barry climbed out of the passenger door and went over to help the lady who was trapped in a car.
He added: " There was so many people wanting to help coming in all directions. I went over and saw everyone then thought it was best left to the experts. But I have never had so many hugs off women!"
He was checked over in A&E supported by assistant faciltiies manager Claire Bushby-Muffitt then discharged.
Back at work on shift this morning he urged all colleagues who use the shuttle-bus to always wear the seat belts.
" Some don't don't but this is the right time to remind everyone. If there had been passengers on my bus the seatbelts could have saved lives."
Our bus, the other taxi bus, a taxi and a car were involved in the incident and a police investigation is underway.
The lady who was cut out of her car and treated at A&E told the Examiner “A doctor parked his car and came down and a nurse on her way to work, I believe, got into the back of my car and held my head. All the emergency services – the police, the fire brigade and paramedics – were brilliant. In the A&E I was also looked after really well.”
