As a mainly weekend worker, Staff Nurse Zoe Willows from ward 19 is so impressed with Nervecentre and HOOP she contacted Chief Exec Owen to tell him as much.
“In the past I’ve had to wait for the doctor, or stay near a phone after bleeping them. This was so frustrating because I want to spend time with my sick patients, not be standing by a phone waiting for a call”.
There are also dedicated teams to take bloods and cannulas now rather than the doctors or nurses having to do it. “It means doctors can get on with being doctors” added Zoe.
Zoe said “Using HOOP took a bit of getting used to in the beginning, but I’m seeing so many benefits now for me and my patients.”
“I can choose a category for my request – which means the doctor understands the level of urgency for the patient.
“There is also a comments field which is great because I can put in extra information to help the clinical teams make decisions.
“Recently for example, a patient was admitted after surgery and also had a history of long-standing health conditions. Although he scored a 6 on NEWS, this wasn’t unusual for this patient. I knew he was clinically well, was sat up in bed talking and was clearly not in urgent need of medical attention. It meant I could use the comments field to add this extra history for the doctors.
“They were pleased I’d done it as they could prioritise a visit to another patient first”.
“I love using Nervecentre and HOOP – I just think of all the time I spend chasing paper around and often we can spend hours looking for notes that may have been misplaced. To have everything in one place is just brilliant. I can only see this getting even better when we switch on EPR".
Zoe gave her feedback through Ask Owen button on the front of the intranet, which is freely open to all colleagues to use.
