The Speech and Language Therapy Team at CRH have their sights on the gruelling Yorkshire Three Peaks Challenge to buy communications equipment for our patients recovering from a stroke.

The team work on both the acute and rehab stroke wards to assess and offer therapy for people with communication and swallowing difficulties after stroke. The money raised will be used to provide more opportunities to engage in social activities and improve their well-being. The money raised will  alsobe put towards  making communications easier for them.

Team Coordinator Dietetics and Speech And Language Therapy Karen Turkington,  said: " For many people, hospital can be an isolating, lonely and challenging experience.  It can be very difficult if  you feel you cannot understand what people are saying to you, or be able to tell people how you feel or what you want?

" Communication problems are very common after stroke."

The Stroke Association estimate there are more than 350,000 people with aphasia*** in the UK. Around one third of stroke survivors have problems with speaking, reading, writing and understanding what other people say to them.

They are aiming to complete the Yorkshire Three Peak challenge - 24-miles long, and 5,200ft (1,585m) of ascent. They will be walking Pen-y-ghent, Whernside and Ingleborough with the aim of finishing in under 12 hours.
