Our Macmillan Information and Support centre at CRH has undergone a £53,000 transformation and had a formal ribbon snipping reopening ceremony.
Lady Halifax - president of Macmillan - reopened the centre last Friday watched by colleagues on the unit.
The charity Macmillan Cancer Support has provided funding to refurbish unit The Jayne Garforth Cancer Information and Support Centre.
The project has created a new quiet room, where visitors can talk through any concerns they have in private, and away from busy, hospital areas. The project has also provided new furniture, improved IT equipment and a full redecoration. The centre provides a free, drop-in service for anyone with questions about cancer.
Macmillan Information Manager, Dinah Coggon, said: “This service has been here for more than a decade, and has always provided a vital source of free information and support for people living with cancer. However, a refurbishment was due and now we have an even better centre, providing a private, comfortable space where people can drop-in and speak to staff or volunteers.”
The centre was originally named in memory of Jayne Garforth, a respected district nurse in Calderdale. Jayne worked alongside Macmillan nurses, having had her own experience of breast cancer. However, she died following a diagnosis of secondary breast cancer. A charitable fund was set up following her death, which helped establish the centre.
The centre is open Monday to Friday, 9am to 4pm (excluding Bank Holidays) and can be reached on 01422 222709 / email: cancerinformationandsupport@cht.nhs.uk
There is also an information service on The Greenlea Oncology Unit at HRI. Both sites are manned by staff and volunteers, and are stocked with a range of information booklets and other resources.
