Nigel Collins is the new head of Electronic Staff Records (ESR) and wants it to work better to make our working lives easier. Read more about him in the latest Hello My Name Is....
I joined the Trust on 1st March. All in all, March has turned into a very busy month for me, my 2 grandchildren both have birthdays in March and my daughter has been studying hard for her HMRC Tax accountancy exams whilst her husband is away working on a cruise liner entertaining people with his singing. So when not trying to learn all the ins and outs of how you do things at CHFT I’ve been pitching in with childcare. I am really looking forward to being able to cycle to work and roll down hill home again it’s going to make a very pleasant break from a 3 hour commute.
What is your position? I am the Electronic Staff Records (ESR) manager, and have joined the Trust to find ways of getting more managers using and benefiting from the ESR Manager Self-Service facility.
Tell us about your career background? Before coming to CHFT I was working at Leeds Community Healthcare – leading the workforce Information Team in dealing the ESR Self-Service, with HR Transactions and the employee benefits.
What are the best bits about your job? I have been busy meeting the managers who are current users of ESR self-service and finding out about their experiences. It’s far too early to say what the best bits are but I expect it’s going to be about the people I get to meet and work with, that and finding ways of making the busy managers and employees lives a little bit easier.
Sum up your role in three words? Communication, Education and Technology
What did you want to be when you were growing up? I first remember wanting to be a postman but delivering newspapers every morning satisfied that dream, and since then I’ve been absorbed by computers and technology and how people use it.
When you are not at work, how do you relax? At home I tinker with the kids toys and models, try some carving and have hopes of one day finishing a handmade chess set. The garden has been very neglected and I’m hoping the time saved from commuting will be spent there this summer.
What is your favourite place? I like to go camping and my favourite place is the tent on an empty campsite as the sun goes down after a good day's walking or cycling.
