Currently around 81% of colleagues are trained for the medical devices they use within their work area. It needs to be 95%

Who needs medical devices training?

Any member of staff who uses a medical device as a part of their role must be deemed competent in its use and have supporting evidence of this.

Why?

The safe use of medical devices is monitored and legislated by the CQC, NHSLA, MHRA, NMC, Health & Safety Act and Patient Safety First to name a few! The Trust is required to organise and record incidents of medical devices training but the responsibility to keep up to date lies with the individual. To use a medical device without being assessed as competent contravenes Trust Policy and national patient safety guidelines

How?

Medical devices training events are organised by the Medical Devices Training Coordinator. However training can also be delivered by Link Nurses in each team/ department. Competency is assessed by using the relevant assessment form which is kept as evidence within the workplace. This training is then updated on the medical devices training database.

Where?

Details of training events, user guides, manuals and competency assessment forms can all be found on the medical engineering website on the staff intranet or by contacting Jayne Blakey, Medical Devices Training Coordinator on HRI 5782 or Brian Bottomley, Training Support Officer on HRI 2108.
