Former CHFT colleague, Lesley Choucri, is one of our new Patient Safety Partners. She, along with our Experts by Experience, came together recently so we could show our appreciation for the support they've offered the Trust over this year.

Lesley, pictured standing third from left said: "It's been lovely coming back to CHFT as a Patient Safety Partner and I've been asked to support discharge planning. I've met so many lovely people, both on the team and fellow volunteers. They are such a passionate bunch, full of energy, hope and improvement. There's lots of work to do, but it's all good!"

Lesley completed her nurse training in 1977, becoming a staff midwife in 1979, before various roles, and finally becoming the Head of Midwifery, Paediatrics and Gynaecology from 1996 to 1998. She completed her 48-year career at Salford University with a stint as Director of Midwifery and Lead Midwife for Education.

Are you planning to produce new information leaflets, make changes to service delivery or make improvements? Please see the information at the bottom of this article.

Patient Safety Partners (PSPs) support activities to improve patient safety at CHFT. They are involved in improving patient safety as part of the Patient Safety Incident Response Framework (PSIRF), ensuring the patient voice is heard, and challenging us in a positive way when things go wrong. The panel is led by Matron for Patient Experience Alex Keaskin, Senior Nurse Vicki Drummond and Head Quality and Patient Safety Sharon Cundy. All of the EBEs and PSPs are volunteers.

Experts by Experience (EBEs) are people who have recent personal experience of using, or caring for someone who uses health services at CHFT. They support us to strengthen patient experience by providing insight into how to guide improvements to ensure the patient's voice is truly heard in any development. Some of the ways they support us include:

  • Working within specific groups and committees to ensure the voice of the patient or carer is heard
  • Sharing their lived experience to support learning and development
  • Supporting the staff recruitment process
  • Helping to design patient pathways or services
  • Getting involved in quality issues and improving standards

Alex said: "It's been lovely welcoming our EBE and PSP volunteers into CHFT and getting to know them all personally. Their enthusiasm for improving CHFT's services has been wonderful to see, and I'm looking forward to seeing how the role develops in the future."

Over the last year our EBEs and PSPs have supported the development of the patient portal, given feedback on the new style appointment letters, shared their views on CHFT visiting policy and reviewed patient information such as a stroke leaflet and a leaflet about ear wax.
