Our latest Star Award goes to not just one or two people, but the whole of Ward 17, who have collectively won for the compassion and care they showed a patient with autism who they cared for on their ward.
Lead Nurse for Learning Disabilities, Amanda Mckie, nominated them saying: "This young man has autism, learning disabilities, is needle phobic and really struggles with the environment in an acute setting. The staff on Ward 17 have really built up a rapport with him, getting to know him and then providing the most amazing person-centred care.
"At Halloween they put up decorations in his room and on the ward - he loved this. They took him down to see the ambulances and asked our YAS colleagues to turn on the flashing lights. They even arranged for the fire brigade to bring an engine to the hospital, because he loves them.
"Two of our doctors, due to the patient's fear of needles, created a song using AI about him being a superhero to help him face his blood tests. They've also worked with the engagement and support team to get him a TV and DVD player to ensure he had stimulation whilst being in hospital.
"Ward 17 always try to think outside the box and creatively too. They often bring things in from home, whether it's their children's DVDs or books to help all our patients with learning disabilities and autism.
"This young man has been very poorly, and Ward 17 have played a huge part in his recovery journey. I am very proud of them, their initiative, their compassion and they have truly provided person-centred care. Amazing!"
Doctors Polly Simpson and Bethany Shears created the AI song. Polly said: "It was Bethany's idea. We noticed that he responded really well to fun and music. One lunch time the two of us shared ideas and managed to create the song using AI software.
"The song is about him being really brave. I definitely think it worked to make him feel more confident in his ability to cope with needles."
After the ward received their Star Award, Sister, Georgina Hemson, said: "The team are fantastic on Ward 17 and work really hard, so this will be a massive morale boost to get this recognition."
