Colleagues on the Stroke Unit at CRH are delighted that from today a major development in the management of stroke is being introduced.

One of the effective treatments for a stroke is a clot-dissolving medicine. This restores blood supply to the brain and helps prevent the damage. Over the past decade, this treatment, known as thrombolyisis, was previously offered to people who presented within 4.5 hours of the onset of the stroke. From today, this time is doubled to nine hours in eligible patients with a new stroke. 

Stroke Innovation Lead, Dr Syed Ahmad, said: “This is a great achievement for our stroke and radiology departments and follows the latest guidelines. We are at the forefront of innovation, using advanced imaging techniques and artificial intelligence. 

Consultant and Clinical Director, Dr Karthik Viswanathan, added: “Having this extended time of thrombolysis is a major milestone in stroke management. It has only been achieved by the teamwork of the stroke and radiology departments and we are proud to be only the second hospital within West Yorkshire to start this treatment.

Miss Sarah Williams, the Matron for Stroke Matron, Sarah Williams, said: “This will benefit our patients by reducing disability and shortening the time needed for rehabilitation. It is great news for our patients.”
